mask making

After Jazmine posted her mask making video, many folks asked about a pattern. Jazmine put together a quick pattern for anyone interested in busting out some masks. It takes a bit of sewing knowledge. It’s comfortable to wear and contains a HEPA filter insert. Enjoy and stay safe!

Call for Poetry Submissions

ELLA is excited to announce that we are working on two books this month. The first is a community poetry book.

We are accepting submissions May 12th – 25th, 2020.

Our Upcoming Picture Book

After years of reading and helping other people craft their own stories, ELLA is excited to announce that we are working on our first picture book entirely in house. Our fabulous co-Founders are hunkering down and putting in the work to craft an original story. If you don’t already follow along with their personal Instagram pages you are missing out. Follow @audreymenardillustrations and @rogue_librarian for all the latest updates.

Interested in being one of the first to get your hands on this when it’s finished?

Covid 19…

The April 18th Book Fiesta may be postponed, but that doesn’t mean that children in East Lake have to wait for their new books. ELLA Library gave out the 800 new books we had on hand and art supplies to children at Emma Wheeler Homes and during the Chattanooga Mobile Food Pantry at East Lake Elementary.

ELLA Library will continue to offer translation support and help connect East Lake families to community resources during this time when clear communication and information is so valuable.

March

Covid 19…

ELLA Library wants children and families to thrive during distant learning and we have committed to help our families get connected in the safety of their home to internet. Over the course of the month of March, ELLA Library registered 200 families in the East Lake, Clifton Hills, and Alton Park communities for free internet available through Comcast’s Internet Essentials and directed those eligible to the EPB Netbridge service. We thank everyone who is working quickly to ensure that children continue to be connect and learn.

We also want to thank Tennessee United for making and organizing a Covid flier distribution to communicate in English and Spanish resources and information available to families. It was our pleasure to assist in canvassing our community to make this information readily available.

Our studio at 5000 Rossville BLVD is set up currently for our community quilting project. This enabled us to quickly switch to making  and distributing fabric mask with a HEPA filter insert for Essential Employees and vulnerable populations in the East Lake community.

February

ELLA Library has spent a year working with UTC and their Community Studio, Interior Architecture, and Construction Management students on visioning and planning of our hopeful permanent home. Last semester students imagined unique pieces that they thought would be a good fit for ELLA Library, and this semester students were given the opportunity to build and implement some of those ideas. Thank you UTC for our functional seating activity cubes and all the love and support your faculty and staff have poured into the vision of ELLA the past year.

We took the opportunity of the rain in February for some community planning and setting up our space at 5000 Rossville BLVD.

January

And Then the comic book created by ELLA Library over the course of several years, began with story telling at East Lake Elementary during the first year of its art program. We were excited to start the new year sharing our passion project and working with 600 children to create their own stories. We want children to fall in love with reading and to see themselves in stories. This was the classic definition of that, these students we able to see their park their community and some of their art work in print. The engagement and attention these children gave us  100 at a time is why we love story sharing.
